There are a lot of things worth discussing when The Affair season 5 arrives, and one of which is Anna Paquin playing the older version of Joanie. The True Blood alum is on board, yet there were only a few details as to why she'll be on the series, though she could bring some information about Allison.

The Affair season 5 will be the final season of the series and this is also the show's first without Ruth Wilson. The affair between Allison (Wilson) and Noah (Dominic West) destroyed both their marriages - to Cole (Joshua Jackson) and Helen (Maura Tierney), respectively.

Allison's daughter Joanie was believed to be Noah's, but it turns out Cole is the father. Wilson's character died at the end of the fourth season, but there were questions surrounding her death, leaving massive twist and two different versions whether she'd been murdered or not.

In a report via TVInsider, Paquin said viewers might get some answers about this, and the actress also talked about where Joanie is in The Affair season 5. She said the adult Joanie is a coastal engineer, and the environment is collapsing in predictable ways, which is her area of expertise. However, her life isn't great and she's not a particularly happy woman.

When Paquin was asked about how the events of her childhood shaped Joanie, she said everything viewers know about the character's life isn't the version of events as she understands it. Joanie grew up without a mother and that likely made a profound effect on her. She and everyone else are confused as to how Allison died.

Paquin said she couldn't drop hints about what really happened to Allison because the specifics are "too crucial" to the plot to go into details, but she made sure viewers will get the answers they're looking for. When it comes to Joanie's relationship to other key characters, the actress declined to answer and joked she didn't want to get in trouble.

In The Affair season 5, Joanie is in Allison's hometown of Montauk, New York, about 30 years later. She is seeking answers to find out what happened to her mother. The tragedy struck her mind and she feels like it's impossible to take out all the demons from her head.

But aside from Joanie's story, the upcoming season will also focus on other core characters as they move forward with their lives. And since this will be the final run of the series, is there a chance to see the characters get better and peace that they seek?

The Affair season 5 arrives on Sunday, August 25, on Showtime.
