Sneaky Pete season 4 is no longer happening on Amazon. The streaming platform decided to cancel the show created by David Shore and Bryan Cranston.
The cancellation news comes nearly after a month of the release of Sneaky Pete season 3. Before getting cut, Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke praised the show and even said that Sneaky Pete had been one of the platform's better-performing series. It was also the second most-streamed original show, per The Hollywood Reporter.
According to speculations, Sneaky Pete season 4 was canceled because its showrunner, Graham Yost, left the production after season 2. Blake Masters and a new team of writers took over for Sneaky Pete season 3 and the changes they've made to the show resulted in a drop in viewership.
Although Sneaky Pete season 3 was still one of Amazon's top shows, its numbers were comparatively lower than the first and second season, per TV Overmind. This was likely a major factor for Amazon's decision to not proceed with Sneaky Pete season 4.
But Sneaky Pete would have never happened if not for Amazon. The show was originally being developed on CBS for its 2015 fall season. However, the network decided to pass on it after the pilot production. Fortunately, there were other networks and platforms interested in taking Sneaky Pete into their fold.
In June of that same year, Amazon won the negotiations to pick up Sneaky Pete and ordered a few tweaks and reshoots. By September 2015, Sneaky Pete season 1 debuted on the platform starring Giovanni Ribisi as the con man Marius Josipović who pretended to be Pete Murphy, his cellmate from prison.
Marius was trying to survive out of prison, knowing that a gangster was still after him. As Pete, he reunited with his "family" who had not suspected at all that he was not the same person.
In March 2016, Shore left the series, and Yost was signed on as its new showrunner and executive producer. After some delays in production, Sneaky Pete season 2 was out on the streaming platform in January 2017 until the series had to once again go through another showrunner change for season 3.
Sneaky Pete also starred Marin Ireland, Margo Martindale, Shane McRae, Peter Gerety, and Lib Barer. Aside from being co-creator, Cranston also had a recurring role in the series.
The first three seasons of Sneaky Pete will remain streaming on Amazon despite the show's cancellation.
