When Sony's self-driving SC-1 concept was first introduced, some have commented how it would make for a cool party bus. Well, the company has the same thing in mind, apparently.
Sony is now working with Yamaha on the SC-1 Sociable Cart, an improved design of the concept that would be used in the future for entertainment purposes, like in amusement parks and golf courses. The new version can accommodate five people instead of three, has longer battery life, and has been added with more sensors to increase the vehicle's awareness.
The SC-1 Social Cart has a top speed of 19kph, which means it won't be speeding through the highway. But then it doesn't really need to because it isn't made for that. Powered by batteries, the cart won't be serving traditional purposes. Sony and Yamaha are already preparing for its launch this year as a platform to push their services.
"The SC-1 is designed to transform what was a mere means of mobility into an all-new opportunity for entertainment," Sony said in a press release. The tech giant has been hard at work on the electric car for several years but only came up with a proof-of-concept prototype in 2016. In 2017, the SC-1 New Concept Cart prototype was born.
The new SC-1 still comes without windows. To get a view of what's outside, there will be a 4K TV that at 49 inches, will provide an ample view of the outdoors. Inside the minivan are four 55-inch 4K displays as well, which will carry some ads and other material.
The battery-powered car will be using AI to optimize promos for outside people based on gender, age, and other factors.
Sony had tested the cart in the Kanucha golf course in Okinawa, Japan. Some lucky folks were able to experience a Moonlight Cruise, which is an AR experience allowing passengers to enjoy visual and audio entertainment featuring night scenes.
If you're wondering how the cart is controlled, well, it would be the passengers. It's understood that voice commands and hand gestures will be used to operate the cart, and someone from "the cloud" will assist in remote operation as well.
Sony and Yamaha will launch the Sociable Cart before the end of March 2020. The companies emphasize that the vehicle is only to be used in controlled and closed circuits. It is not to be taken outdoors and will not be used as public transportation.
