Despite fan expectations of a fall 2019 release, Westworld season 3 won't be back on HBO until 2020. Its production, however, is still right up on schedule, as revealed by one of its newest cast member Aaron Paul.
Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at a red-carpet event, Paul said they have begun working on the final episode's filming in late September. Expectedly, Westworld season 3 could wrap up principal photography by early or mid-October, as the schedule has been going to plan.
This means that the multi-nominated series could be in post-production by the last quarter of 2019, and could be right on track for an April or May 2020 airing on the cable network. At the moment, HBO has no released additional promo for Westworld season 3 other than what was teased back at the Comic-Con in July.
When Westworld season 3 returns, however, it would be two episodes short compared to the first and second season. As per The Wrap, the upcoming installment will just be eight episodes and not 10 episodes. However, HBO won't comment on whether these will be supersized offerings as long as a feature film.
HBO chief Casey Bloys also said that Westworld season 3 might not be the last since creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are under contract with the network for a possible season 4 and season 5 release. This, despite the duo's new commitment to develop shows for the streaming platform Amazon.
Meanwhile, Paul will be introduced in Westworld season 3 as Caleb, who has ties with an old character, Dolores (played by Evan Rachel Wood). It's unclear, however, if Caleb is also an AI like Dolores, or he is a human who may be sympathetic to the machines.
Incidentally, Caleb has a robot sidekick named George, who doesn't talk at all but who servers as his confidante. Together, Caleb and George work at a construction site outside of Westworld.
Rumor has it that Jimmi Simpson could be back in Westworld season 3 despite saying in past interviews that he was no asked to work on the current season. According to fans on Reddit, there was a stunt double listed for Simpson in Westworld season 3 episode 6 on IMDb. However, Simpson himself is not listed as part of the cast.
According to Daily Caller, it seems HBO made efforts to conceal this information regarding Simpson's return but forgot about his stunt double. Simpson was regular in the first season and became a recurring star in the second season.
