Apple is ending this year with a bang as the iPhone 11 range continues to sell reasonably well. Looking into the near future, the iPhone 12's arrival is pretty imminent, so we can only imagine the features that come with the 2020 flagships.
With leaks being a staple in the tech industry, some of them have provided us with enough details that the upcoming handsets could arrive with. The latest is brought to us by graphic designer and tipster Bes Geskin, who in a tweet spilled some info, albeit questionable, about the 2020 iPhones.
According to Geskin, Apple is testing out various Face ID prototypes for the iPhone 12 line of smartphones. Last month, the leakster also claimed that the Cupertino tech giant is prototyping a 6.7-inch screen iPhone with slim bezels instead of the notch to accommodate the TrueDepth sensors. Now he says there will be a notch, but Apple might shrink it in light of the Face ID prototype testing.
The leak further details that a few prototypes make use of new optics. Some are reportedly smaller in width, meaning the resulting notch is noticeably shorter, while others are said to be compact enough to fit inside the top bezel, although it's unclear if a thicker bezel is required to achieve this.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicted a new form factor for the iPhone 12, which in a way corroborates Geskin's claims.
2020 iPhone prototypes include wider antenna lines (>1mm) for 5G ️ Instead of plastic lines it will use a new material (glass, ceramic or sapphire) pic.twitter.com/69z02kSTa8 — Ben Geskin (@BenGeskin) October 22, 2019
Another design element change that will go about the iPhone 12 is the wider antenna. Geskin says that next year's flagships could have an antenna line wider than of more than 1mm to accommodate 5G network connectivity. And instead of plastic, the antenna lines will use glass, sapphire, or ceramic.
Apple is reportedly mulling over the Lightning port as well, Geskin claims, and is toying the idea of ditching it and replace it with wireless tech. Of course, all these should be taken with a grain of salt.
The changes in the 2020 iPhones' design element seem a bit drastic, but with 5G connectivity making its way in Apple's smartphones next year, maybe there should be changes. While Geskin's track record isn't spotless, we got to admit that the concepts he presented are actually feasible.
While Geskin creates stunning concepts, his track record when it comes to leaks is not exactly spotless. Thus, it's recommended that you take this report with a pinch of salt. In any case, September 2020 is several months, so Apple might rethink many decisions by that time when finalizing the iPhone 12 design.
