Apple has done a great job with the iPhone 11 series, and the company now sees positive sales outcomes because of the latest handsets. But, compared to other competing brands like Samsung and Huawei, Apple is still behind in terms of 5G support on smartphones. A new report, however, claims that this might change next year claiming that Apple will equip its 2020 iPhones with 5nm chipsets and 5G modems.

Nikkei recently shared that Apple is developing a new Bionic chip based on 5-nanometer architecture. The report also states that the Cupertino-based tech giant is tapping Qualcomm and will use its X55 5G modem. This will be reportedly paired with the 5nm chip and will be in all the upcoming 2020 iPhones.

Apple is widely anticipated to introduce 5G ready iPhones in 2020 as it currently holds off releasing due to tactical and practical reasons. The latest report underlines that Apple is now using Qualcomm's help instead of developing its own 5G modem, considering that it has already acquired Intel's modem division. It also emphasizes Apple and Qualcomm's business as a usual partnership after settling the legal dispute both have endured.

Based on the latest report, all three 2020 iPhones will feature 5G modems and will run on 5nm chips. This is in contrast to previous rumors that Apple will only release several variants of 2020 iPhones with 5G support. Nikkei inside sources also say that Apple has already set an aggressive sales target for the 5G enabled 2020 iPhones indicating that the current iPhone 11 series will be replaced by a more powerful iPhone series next year.

If the latest report is true, this will be the first time that we see a 5nm chip used on an iPhone. One of the crucial advantages of a 5nm chip is that it is power efficient aside from packing more processors, making it more powerful from the current 7nm chipset available in the market. It also goes well with the 5G modem considering that 5G connectivity reportedly is draining the battery at a faster rate.

Apple is preparing an impressive list of products next year. TFI analyst and popular Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo already suggested that we will see a more powerful iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of 2020 along with a new Apple AR Glasses. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is also anticipated to arrive in the second or third quarter of next year. And, of course, the 5G enabled 2020 iPhones.
