It is almost 25 years since Sony launched the PlayStation brand in the gaming industry. Since then, we have seen four iterations of the world's best-selling gaming console and now waiting for the fifth installment scheduled to arrive on the holiday of 2020. But, while the PlayStation 5 is not yet officially released, Sony already secured trademarks for PS6, PS7, PS8, PS9, and PS10.
Gematsu, a Japanese gaming site recently reported that Sony Interactive Entertainment has already filed trademarks for the future gaming consoles of the company. The trademarks want to secure that the company will get to retain the branding for the abbreviations. These trademarks do not imply that Sony is now developing the technology for these future gaming consoles, nor do these consoles are already in the development.
The move is simply Sony's simple insurance policy that the brand it has developed and made known over the years will stay with the company. The Japanese site also shares that Sony filed the trademark of PS5 in 2006, underlining the fact that Sony is always thinking ahead and filing trademarks in advance is simply out of practice or habit.
It also means that the Japanese console maker believes that the PlayStation brand will be around even after a decade or more despite attacks from various fronts made by other competing gaming platforms. Since its launch, the original PlayStation brand has shipped around 102 million units and has become a household name. As technology advances and becomes more immersive, the PlayStation brand will most likely stay at the forefront of the gaming industry for more years to come.
Meanwhile, Sony's next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 5, is scheduled to arrive sometime in the holiday of 2020. Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan recently announced the next generation gaming console's official release window and confirmed some of its rumored features. Sony's Lead Architect Mark Cerny earlier stated that the PlayStation 5 would house a custom-version of AMD Zen 2 CPU. We also know that the upcoming gaming console will have a Solid State Drive (SSD).
A few weeks ago, reports were claiming that Sony will release the PlayStation 5 alongside the PlayStation 5 Pro model. We also learned that PlayStation is working in collaboration with Sony Music to ensure that curated game soundtracks will be embedded in the gaming console's exclusive titles. The release window of the PlayStation 5 is still a few months away, expect to hear more about the next generation gaming console between now and holiday 2020.
