A fresh patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment seems to have leaked images of the PlayStation 5 DualShock 5 controller ahead of the scheduled 'Holiday 2020' launch of Sony's next generation gaming console. The design sketches, first spotted by VGC, were recently published on the Japanese Patent Office. Although there is no mention of the PS5 Dual Shock controller, the images align with everything we have been hearing about the upcoming next generation gaming console accessory.
If the latest patent is to be taken at face value, the PlayStation 5 DualShock 5 controller eradicates the light bar of the DualShock 4. Additionally, it modifies the size of the sticks and triggers and adds what seems to be a USB port where the headphone jack is currently positioned. Overall, nothing much has changed if the latest patent from Sony is to be believed.
Sony's DualShock 3, 4, and Sixaxis controllers introduced new features for PS3 and PS4, the layout and size of the alleged PS5 DualShock 5 controller have significantly stayed the same. It looks like the upcoming PS5 controller will continue the touch pad in the center of the controller that was first introduced in DualShock 4. It is worth noting that Sony earlier confirmed that the haptic feedback of the PlayStation 5 DualShock 5 controller will provide more sophisticated rumble effects compared to what the PS4 controller could offer.
Additionally, game designers will have the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the controller's trigger and haptic motors to match the desired in-game action. This way, the feeling of firing a gun, for instance, will feel unique. Moreover, the PlayStation 5 DualShock 5 will feature a USB-C charging port a departure from the USB Micro-B connection of the PlayStation 4.
A breakdown courtesy of ResetEra that shows several PlayStation 5 leaked images reveals that the PS5 DualShock 5 controller might feature a built-in microphone that wraps around the underbelly of the controller. While the patent could be the PS5 controller, it could also be a new DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4, just like the Microsoft Elite Controller on Xbox One. However, the idea of the patent surfacing it proximate to the launch of Sony's next generation gaming console seems plausible.
While details about the alleged PlayStation 5 DualShock 5 controller are interesting, patents are in no way, official confirmation that it is going to be released soon. Sony, like all other tech giants, has a habit of filing patents, which most of them stay as patents and do not make its way to the market.
