The Surface Connect port is primarily used to charge the range of Microsoft devices. In 2019, we saw Microsoft introduce innovative hardware, but it appears that the company is working on something that could be a game-changer. A patent filed by the Redmond-based company hints that it is looking into some innovative changes in its next-generation Microsoft Surface Pro with a new Type Cover integrated with a solar panel.

The patent presumably for the next generation Microsoft Surface Pro was filed with the USPTO in 2018 and was only published recently. It suggests a Type Cover with built-in solar panels for charging the device. The details are available on the patent titled, "Mobile Device Cover With Integrated Solar Panel."

The patent was published a few days ago and illustrates a removable keyboard with a stand located at the back, which comes with solar panels. These panels could serve as the power source to the host device, as well as to the keyboard. The Type Cover presumably for the next generation Microsoft Surface Pro, could fit four panels that double as a stand.

Additionally, the patent mentions that it is possible to charge the device even with an artificial light source. It could come very handy, particularly when you are indoors or at night. Moreover, the patent mentions the device's ability to charge while it is being used, which makes the entire solution very convenient and useful.

Solar panels on the device's kickstand mean it could be adjusted to receive as much light as possible. The only downside about this solution is that it could affect the viewing angles. If this patent ends up in the next generation of Microsoft Surface Pro and other Microsoft devices, it could mean you can go off-grid without having to worry about charging your device.

The innovative solution in the Microsoft patent is ideal for environment-conscious consumers as it provides a more sustainable mean of charging the Microsoft Surface Pro. It would also be interesting if the Redmond-based tech giant would be able to integrate these solar panels on the next generation Microsoft Surface Pro without sacrificing its overall look and weight. But, it is worth mentioning that this is just a patent and is in no way an indication that the innovative solution could make its way to the market.

Just like other tech companies, patents could enter production or could remain as a concept. But, it is interesting to learn that Microsoft is looking into this kind of innovation.
