For the plants to create fruits and reproduce, bees play a very crucial role. These pollinators' goal is to search and collect nectar from the flowers of plants, which they use to get energy from. As they do their job, tiny little pollens are attached through their body and are transferred from different flowers to another as they seek more of this sugar-rich liquid. Once pollinated, these flowers eventually produce fruits, for human consumption, and seeds, for plant's regeneration, as explained by Friends of the Earth.
So how important bees are? Given this reason, without bees and other pollinators such as insects like wasps and butterflies, and other animals such as birds, monkeys, and rodents, it is almost impossible for the plant to reproduce and produce foods. Humans surely won't have enough food for everyone and eventually will starve and die.
Unfortunately, the number of pollinators, especially bees, are decreasing more and more every year. Research showed how the population of these pollinators has decreased by 40.7% between April 1, 2018, and a year after, as reported by ABC News. Some of the factors include the increasing temperature of the climate and the usage of insecticide.
With this rate, it is now crucial to help these creatures survive extinction, or else humans will inevitably suffer in the years to come. So, how can we help these little guys survive and increase in number again?
PLANT HERBS IN YOUR GARDEN
Aside from being the perfect ingredient to boost the tastes of your delicacies, herbs can also be very appealing to bees. So, if you want to attract more bees in your garden or make them happy, plant herbs in your garden. Some of these you have to include are Motherwort, Solomon's seal, Nasturtium, Feverfew, Calendula, Angelica, Anise Hyssop, and Arnica.
INCLUDE MORE FLOWERING PLANTS
Flowers are significant for bees to survive. They are basically like the bank where they can withdraw nectar anytime. Without it, bees may lose strength and eventually die. If you want to help them survive and be happy, plant more flowering plants. Besides, these kinds of plants are also excellent to look at and could also beautify your garden. So, planting such plants is like hitting two birds with one stone.
There are still other things you can do to help these bees survive. Some of these things include allowing flowering weeds to survive in your lawn, by not using pesticides and other chemicals that can be a threat to these insects, and by putting water outside your homes every time.
