Meghan Markle has an ally in another American who became a part of the British aristocracy. Amid criticisms that she and her husband Prince Harry were selfish to walk away from their royal duties, Julie Montagu, who is also known as the Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, said that she sympathizes with the Duchess of Sussex.

Montagu knows what life is like for Meghan because she also had to fit into the upper class. As an American who married Timothy Charles Montagu, who is the Viscount Hinchinbrook, and the son of the Earl of Sandwich, Montagu said that her adjustment to the ways of the aristocrats was the "hardest thing."

However, as much as she has a similar experience with the Sussex royal, Montagu said her struggles to fit in were still nothing compared to what Meghan went through. Montagu agreed with statements that said the British press has been ruthless against Prince Harry's wife.

The Viscountess Hinchinbrook said that it was a challenge to look for positive stories about the Duchess of Sussex because there was hardly anything good from the media. During her first few years as an aristocrat, Montagu was also the subject of nasty stories about her, especially since the British prefer that the men marry an "English Rose" over a progressive American.

The Viscountess Hinchinbrook also said that protocols and royal rules bounded Meghan's life, which prevented her from voicing her opinions. Montagu said that while aristocrats also abide by social etiquettes, she could at least speak up on issues that mattered to her.

In 2018, Montagu actually predicted Meghan would have a hard time adjusting to the royal life. But the Viscountess Hinchinbrook advised Meghan that she has to remain true to herself and her roots and not let the bad press affect her, per Daily Express.

Montagu said that her being outspoken and her "can-do" energy as an American may have been the very reason she became endearing to her husband. She believes that this is also likely why Prince Harry fell in love and married Meghan.

Prince Harry and Meghan are now living their life away from the royal family and the media scrutiny in Canada. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave up on their royal duties and privileges in exchange for a more peaceful life, where they can raise their son, Archie, in a typical environment.
