The Witcher season 2 has found its Vesemir! The character, who will serve as the father figure to Henry Cavill's Geralt of Rivia, was rumored to be played by Star Wars actor Mark Hamill but reports have just confirmed Kim Bodnia from Killing Eve will play the significant role.
In an official statement, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich said in a statement that she cannot wait for Bodnia to bring Vesemir to life. Hissrich added that she's admirer of the actor's unique talents.
Vesemir's character is described as the "oldest and most experienced witcher" and a survivor of the haunt that nearly exterminated their kind. Vesemir is protective of the few remaining witchers, especially Geralt. In The Witcher video games, Vesemir is like a cheery and doting grandfather who is still capable of stabbing monsters with precision.
Bodnia gained recognition in the Scandinavian series The Bridge, but Hollywood fans and viewers may best know him as Konstantin Vasiliev, the Russian spy and handler of Villanelle in Killing Eve. Bodnia embodies both warmth and strength, which are two of the strongest points of Vesemir.
Since The Witcher debuted on Netflix, fans wanted Hamill, famous for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, to play the pivotal role in season 2. Hamill even responded to the fan suggestion positively on Twitter despite not seeing the show or knowing about the character.
Hissrich liked the casting idea but told IGN that they haven't been casting at the time of the interview. The showrunner said that Hamill has always been on her radar. She also said it is a huge deal to have both Star Wars and The Witcher fanbase getting excited for the possibility of Luke Skywalker joining the series.
Meanwhile, production for The Witcher season 2 has not officially started, but Cavill is in the middle of training as the monster hunter. On Instagram, Cavill posted photos of his bonding time with the horses he works with on the show. The actor said that he needs to build up his relationship with these animals to add authenticity to his character, a seasoned horseman.
Based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher season 2 will also bring back Yennefer (played by Anya Chalotra), Ciri (played by Freya Allen) and Jaskier (played by Joey Batey). Netflix has yet to announce the second season's official release date, but the first season remains on the streaming platform.
