Most people are aware of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s love story. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge didn’t have the traditional royal courtship as Kate was a commoner.

Although Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary last month, they have known each other much longer than that. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met each other in 2001 when they both attended St. Andrews University.

The pair struck up a friendship but the romance was not on their minds at that moment because Kate Middleton was in a romantic relationship with an older student. But Prince William decided to take their friendship to the next level when the gorgeous brunette broke up with her boyfriend.

“William and Kate were no more than friends and it was in that capacity that they started living together in 2002, with two others, away from the university's own student accommodation,” journalist Oliver Marre said. “Kate was going out with a bloke called Rupert Finch. Soon afterward, though, they split up and I remember William saying that he thought he might ‘have a go.’”

Prince William and Kate Middleton began dating in 2003. Then five years into their relationship, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who were in their mid-twenties, were pressured by the media to get engaged. However, the prince was not ready to settle down at the time.

This, reportedly, made Carole Middleton worry if Prince William will marry her daughter. According to royal author Katie Nicholl, Kate Middleton’s mom had been asking the prince about his intentions.

“Perhaps it was the constant references to Waity Katie which got to William,” she wrote in a 2011 Vanity Fair issue. “Possibly it was the words of his soon-to-be mother-in-law which rang in the prince’s ears. Before Christmas 2009, Carole Middleton had anxiously asked him when he planned to make an honest woman of her daughter. After what was at that point a seven-year courtship and two breakups there was still no ring on Kate’s finger, and she was nearly 28. In the cozy kitchen of the Middletons’ home in Bucklebury, William reiterated to Carole what he had told Kate: they would be married, but he needed to complete his military training first.”

Now, Prince William and Kate Middleton had been married for almost a decade. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge share three beautiful children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis after tying the knot in 2011.
