Organizations have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, and it's true both for the NBA and the member teams. The Warriors are no exception, but reports said the team's financial standing is not exactly bad that the goal for next season is to spend where and when necessary and win the championship again.
The money that the Dubs enjoyed during the dominant years of winning three NBA titles in five successive appearances in the NBA Finals is not at the same level as today. Golden State exited from the competition early, and the assumption is, business is not that good.
That might be true but according to NBC Sports, GSW is not struggling at all in terms of finances. Citing the report from The Athletic, it would seem that the team has access to resources that would smooth operation and a campaign to capture another Larry O'Brien.
There will be big spending to come like the possible signing of a Top 5 pick in the draft, which will cost money, and the past expenditures such as the building of the Chase Center arena have to be factored in when looking forward. Generally, the Dubs have the money to spend.
They can draw funds from sponsorship deals, which the report said can only be characterized as massive, and the team can also make use of tax incentives. Overall, the Warriors are stable enough when the concern is the financial books.
Still, GSW owner Joe Lacob has acknowledged the fact that the situation could change drastically, and the team must brace for impact in case of a crisis popping up. Lacob hinted, though, that his squad will take advantage of a healthier lineup coming back in the upcoming campaign.
Next season, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green are expected to be in top shape, so it only makes sense that Golden State will go for the win. That also means decisions will be made in support of the title run, and in many cases, money is needed.
It would seem Lacob is all for financing whatever is needed for the Dubs to return to their winning ways. The owner is sending out the signal that he is playing aggressively.
Meanwhile, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said his piece on the notion that the 2020 NBA Finals winner will need to bear with an asterisk, an explainer, next to the championship trophy. According to the Golden State Of Mind, Kerr said that winning the title this year is just the same as with the previous years.
"There's no asterisk in my mind. This is gonna be a brutally difficult journey to try and win a title," explained the Warriors coach.
