Miley Cyrus has been sober for the last six months. The singer revealed why she decided to stay away from any substances and alcohol, and the silver lining on her vocal cord surgery last year.

Miley has been open about smoking weeds. In a new interview with Variety and iHeart podcast The Big Ticket, Cyrus talked about the vocal cord surgery she underwent in November and how it made her decide to be sober.

The "Malibu" songstress said at first she became sober because of her surgery. Then she looked back on her parents' past and she realized that both of her parents dealt with some mental health issues when they were young.

Miley said her mother, Tisha, was adopted so she has the abandonment feelings when she was young. The parents of her father, Billy Ray Cyrus,  got divorced when he was three and he learned how to take care of himself. Miley said by understanding her family history helps her understand her present and future.

The "Wrecking Ball" singer also explained that the injury on her vocal cord was caused by "overuse." It wasn't surprising for Cyrus since she started singing and touring since she was 12 years old.

Miley admitted it was challenging for her to stay sober as a young person due to peer pressure. But she decided to keep her sobriety because she no longer wants to wake up with a hangover every morning.

After the surgery, Miley said she wasn't allowed to talk for four weeks. She communicates with everyone through writing on a whiteboard. The Hannah Montana actress admitted it was hard but now she realized how it helped her prepare for the "stillness and the quietness" during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Meanwhile, Cyrus also talked about her experience acting again. The 27-year-old singer previously played Ashley O on Netflix anthology series Black Mirror.

Like Miley, Ashley is a pop star. She, however, was placed into a coma after her food was laced with medication. Miley said she used her trauma of losing her Malibu house during a bushfire so she could play the role effectively.

Miley said her difference with Ashley is that she doesn't have a controlling manager, Aunt Catherine, but the "Party In The U.S.A" has the opposite. Cyrus said she has her mother, who she trusts with everything. The Last Song actress said without my parents, she thinks her life would be like Ashley O.

At the moment, Miley is busy hosting her Instagram show, Bright Minded. When asked if she plans to make it a real talk show, she teased that it could be a possibility by replying, "We'll see."
