Netflix seems to have high hopes on The Witcher as the streaming service ordered a prequel series after just one season. The six-part, live-action limited series is titled The Witcher: Blood Origin and it is set thousand years ago from the flagship show.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is set in an Elven world 1,200 years before the world of The Witcher. It centers on the origin of the very first Witcher and the events that led to the pivotal "conjunction of the spheres," when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

The prequel series is slated to shoot in the U.K but the cast and other specific details haven't been revealed as of yet. Declan de Barra acts as the showrunner and executive producer, while Lauren Schmidt Hissrich also serves as executive producer. Franchise creator Andrzej Sapkowski will be the creative consultant.

Meanwhile, de Barra said he's beyond excited to tell the story of The Witcher: Blood Origin. He added there's a burning question in his mind since he first read The Witcher books: "What the Elven world looks like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans?"

The story behind the fall of the civilization wasn't really explored and the prequel series could provide some answers. As per de Barra, The Witcher: Blood Origin tells the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall and will reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.

Hissrich, on the other hand, said she's thrilled to collaborate with Netflix and de Barra, and she's excited to expand and explore The Witcher universe. She also revealed they can't wait to introduce new characters and original stories that will enrich the magical and mythical world even more.

Sapkowski is also excited that the world of The Witcher is expanding and hoping they could bring more fans to the world of his books. Aside from the prequel series, Netflix also announced in January 2020 that an animated spin-off film is coming, titled The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf. The story focuses on the origin of Geralt's mentor and fellow Witcher Vesemir.

The official release date of The Witcher: Blood Origin remains unknown at the moment, while the second season of the original show is waiting to resume production, which started back in February in the U.K. Filming was forced to shut down because of the global health crisis and production is set to resume in August. Hence, we could expect The Witcher season 2 in 2021.
