There is little doubt that Dune is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2020. After all, the new adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi masterpiece boasts of an amazing all-star cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa and more.

In addition, the movie is being helmed by Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve. Luckily, the first trailer for the sci-fi epic is finally here and it features a terrifying encounter between Paul Atreides and one of the gigantic sandworms of Arrakis.

The trailer opens with Paul Atreides finding himself in a desert where he sees a woman with bright blue eyes who calls his name. This is when he awakens and realizes it was all a dream. Soon, he meets with Gaius Helen Mohiam who asks if he has dreams that have come true. After Paul confirms it, the Reverend Mother then presents him with a mysterious box that will serve as a test for him.

Gaius Helen Mohiam explains the test to Paul Atreides. "Remove your hand from the box and you die," she tells him as she holds a pin to his neck. This proves to be a difficult test for the boy who questions what is in the mysterious box. "Pain," the Reverend Mother states.

From there, it is confirmed that Paul Atreides is truly a powerful being but that also means he has a great responsibility to face. "You have proven you can rule yourself, now you must learn to rule others," Gaius Helen Mohiam tells him. "Something none of your ancestors learned."

The Dune trailer also shows how the Atreides family moves to Arrakis, which the Reverend Mother says is a death trap. This is soon proven by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who orders his nephew Glossu Rabban to "kill them." But it also reveals that Paul Atreides is truly destined for greater things as he finally encounters the woman who haunts his dreams.

The Dune teaser concludes with Paul Atreides finding a large disturbance in the sand in the desert. Although he tries to run, he simply isn't fast enough and he finds himself facing one of the gigantic sandworms that inhabit the desert. Will this be the end for Paul or can he manage to escape? The truth will be revealed in December.

Dune was originally set to premiere in November but has been moved back to a later date. It is currently scheduled for release on December 18.
