Iran will pay $150,000 to each family of those killed in the shooting down of a Ukrainian passenger plane near Tehran earlier this year.

Ukraine and other governments have been pressuring Iran to be more cooperative and to provide compensation to the families of the 176 victims. While the IRNA news agency confirmed Iran would pay it didn't specify when.

Iran initially denied responsibility for the January shooting. Pressure from an international investigation forced the Iranian military to admit that it had mistakenly fired upon the Ukrainian plane.

The incident happened during tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The U.S. had launched a drone strike in Baghdad that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani just a few days before the plane was shot down.

Iran officials said "human error" was to blame. In a report released by the military it was indicated that the people manning a surface-to-air missile battery mistook the plane for a U.S. fighter jet. Soldiers reportedly fired twice without approval.

The plane was a Boeing 737 operated by Ukraine International Airlines. It was heading to Kyiv with 167 passengers and nine crew. The victims were citizens of Britain, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sweden, Canada and Iran.

Those governments pressured Iran to accept "full responsibility" and pay compensation.
