Gamers are now giving their full attention to the PlayStation 5, Sony’s latest game console that debuted last November. Hence, it would only be a matter of time before Sony would cut off the production of the PlayStation 4. And based on the latest update, that is likely to happen soon.

According to Japan-based retailer Cheesemeister3K, select brand new PS4 models will be ending their production soon. Though they are only one retailer who made the announcement, it indicates that the production of brand new PlayStation 4 SKUs will be discontinued soon. Hence, the only stocks left on hand will be the last ones available. Below are the units that will no longer be available once they are sold out.

  • PS4 500 GB Glacier White
  • PS4 1TB Jet Black
  • PS4 1TB Glacier White
  • PS4 2TB Jet Black
  • PS4 Pro 1 TB Glacier White

The move, even if it comes from only one retailer is hardly surprising. The PlayStation 5 has proven to be a massive success for both the standard game console and the PS5 Digital Edition. With the demand expected to continue to rise, it only makes sense that Sony would need to make room for added stocks.

So far, Sony has not made any official announcement but the transition speaks for itself. It is a common practice for most companies to stop production for old consoles with most diverting their attention to getting the latest model.

In the US alone, Sony has already stopped selling the PS4 Pro via online stores. When this happened, there was already an announcement that they would no longer restock these consoles although this was later removed.

Gamers who are worried about game availability as they transition to the PS5 also need not fret. The PlayStation 5 comes with a background compatibility feature that allows most to bring their physical libraries to the latest Sony console. Hence, they can continue to enjoy their old games since they will have the ability to download them and play older games on the PS5.

At some point, Sony is expected to make an official announcement. Some may not be surprised with the development with the PS4 expected to fade away soon.

For some who still want the PS4, a recourse would be to check out sites that could dangle their old units for sale and at a cheaper price. That option could also offer good savings assuming that the units are still working properly.
