Protesters gathered in the streets of central Buenos Aires on Wednesday, demanding justice for the death of professional football player Diego Maradona.

The demonstrations were held just a few days after a panel of experts began their investigation into his death.

The investigation is reportedly aiming to determine whether or not medical negligence played a part in the death of the football legend.

Most of the demonstrators that joined Wednesday's gathering wore Argentinian football jerseys. Some were holding flags and banners with Maradona's face. Several protesters even brought with them life-sized cutouts of the football player.

"He did not die, they killed him! Justice for Diego. Trial and punishment of the guilty," one protester said in a post on social media.

Local media reports said that most of the protesters are convinced that Maradona did not die of natural causes. Some of them believe that he may have been killed by his own entourage and those that were with him when he died.

The 60-year-old football player, who is considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, died in November last year in the city of Tigre. He reportedly died of a heart attack in his home in Dique Lujan in Argentina. Maradona died just weeks after he had undergone brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma.

A panel of experts convened by Argentina's public prosecutor's office met Monday to begin their investigation into the football star's death. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, a wrongful death case may be mounted.

The panel is comprised of 10 specialists and 10 medical experts. The panel is expected to deliver its finding within two or three weeks. Maradona's neurosurgeon, his psychiatrist, two nurses, a medical coordinator, and a nursing coordinator are currently under investigation.

Maradona's initial autopsy report showed that he was not intoxicated or had used drugs before he died. Maradona had been battling alcoholism and drug addiction for much of his life. He also was experiencing kidney, heart, and lung problems. Maradona was reportedly also suffering from mental ailments such as depression and anxiety and was taken several medications to treat them.
