German motor-vehicle maker BMW has introduced its first-ever all-electric sedan, the BMW i4. The company also launched an all-electric sport utility vehicle, the BMW iX.

BMW plans to build 25 new fully electric vehicles by 2025.

BMW said the top-of-the-line i4 will have an electric powertrain capable of up to 530 horsepower. The vehicle will have a zero to 100 kilometers per hour time of four seconds.

BMW said preliminary tests conducted using Environmental Protection Agency procedures showed the i4 should be capable of up to 300 miles on a single charge. That's enough to go from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, BMW said.

The BMW iX will have a similar range but more power. The vehicles will have ranges shorter than Tesla but BMW said its electric cars beat ranges offered by competitors Porsche and Audi.

"With its sporty looks, best-in-class driving dynamics and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric," BMW management board member Pieter Nota said.

BMW didn't say how much the vehicles would cost. The company said the two vehicles should be available later this year.

Unlike the BMW i3 - the company's first all-electric car - the i4 will be a standard four-door sedan.
