The moon will enter a new lunar phase on May 4 and according to Taco Bell, that phase happens to look like a taco. To commemorate this celestial event, the fast food chain will give free tacos.

Taco Bell will hand out the most tacos it has ever given away for free on a single day on the day of the "Taco Moon," as well as launch a new marketing campaign supporting its global expansion.

Taco fans around the country will get a free Crunchy Taco all day on May 4 via the app or online with no purchase required in celebration of the taco-shaped phase of the moon.

This freebie, however, will not be limited to the mainland United States - as more than twenty markets around the world will participate, including the United Kingdom, India, and Guatemala. Each market will also put its own spin on the offer.

For example, the campaign will compare London's popular Underground signage to a taco and will include a promotion with the London Eye observation wheel. Bollywood stars will be participating in India, and "taconautas" will be walking the streets of Guatemala to raise awareness.

"Taco Bell has been an established brand in the U.S. for nearly 60 years and we are thrilled by the accelerating fandom we're seeing globally," Julie Felss Masino, president of Taco Bell International, said in a statement.

"As we're opening more and more restaurants internationally, we know the May 4 moon will take us to new heights as we introduce ourselves to new future fans in a delicious way."

Masino refused to say how many new international locations would open this year, but he did say they would be a "big part" of the company's target of reaching 10,000 global locations by the end of the decade.

The campaign will last several months and will be "locally relevant and distinctive," Masino said.
