Queen Elizabeth II was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday on the advice of her doctors. Buckingham Palace officials said she was admitted for "preliminary investigations" and was discharged by doctors just a day after.

Doctors reportedly also advised the Queen to cancel her scheduled trip to Northern Ireland. Palace officials said she was told to "rest for a few days" until she fully recovers. Officials did not specify what the queen's illness was or what doctors had found.

"The Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits," Buckingham Palace said.

Sources familiar with the matter said the queen stayed in the hospital overnight for observation and it was also too late at night for her to be driven home.

Before she was admitted to the hospital, the queen had a busy few days. On Tuesday, the queen attended an event for global business leaders at Winsor Castle. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had also attended the same event.

Buckingham Palace said the queen was "very disappointed" that she was to cancel her plans for the rest of the week, including her planned visit to Northern Ireland.

Officials did not say how long the queen would need to stay at home or if she would be able to meet her commitments in the coming days. Queen Elizabeth is scheduled to lead the royal delegation that would be attending the climate summit in Glasgow next month.

Even after her husband's death, Queen Elizabeth still keeps a busy schedule in attending international events and fulfilling her royal duties. Prince Philip passed away earlier in the year. The queen and Prince Philip were married for 73 years and had four children together. The pair also had eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Queen Elizabeth became the country's monarch in 1952 when she was just 25 years old. She is currently the UK's longest-serving monarch. Next in line to the throne is her eldest son Prince Charles. The 72-year-old prince is the longest server heir apparent in UK history. He has been next in line to the throne for 69 years.
