One of the initial iPhone 14 leaks from September suggested that the iPhone 14 would be the first iPhone model without any form of camera bump in years. Recent leaks, on the other hand, have refuted that notion, the most recent being from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

According to Kuo, the next-generation iPhone's Pro and Pro Max models would actually increase the bump.

The reason, according to Kuo, is to accommodate a wider camera with a 48MP camera system, which is a significant upgrade from the 12MP on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. According to him, the camera bump's diagonal length will expand by around 33%, while its height will increase by approximately 10%.

"The main reason for the larger and more prominent rear-camera bump of the 14 Pro/Pro Max is upgrading the wide camera to 48MP (vs. 13 Pro/Pro Max's 12MP). The diagonal length of 48MP CIS will increase by 25-35%, and the height of 48MP's 7P lens will increase by 5-10%," Kuo explains.

Kuo's claim, like with previous predictions, that the hump will be a redesign for the upcoming flagship phones would remove the massive camera bump in the iPhone 13, which houses two or three lenses depending on the model. Leaker Jon Prosser, who has a mixed track record of accuracy, anticipated that the iPhone 14 would remove the bump entirely, which might suggest a larger chassis for camera components.

Other iPhone 14 rumors have stated that Apple will ditch the front notch on Pro models in favor of a smaller hole-punch camera - a display with only a small circular cutout for the front camera. Another theory holds that the Pro and Pro Max will feature a hole and pill-shaped cutout to accommodate the front-facing camera and Face ID.

The 48MP camera system is likely to be confined to iPhone 14 Pro models and will support 8K video recording, a substantial improvement over the iPhone 13 Pro's 12MP camera and 4K video recording capabilities. Apple's long-rumored AR/VR headset is believed to be compatible with high-resolution 8K films taken with the iPhone 14 Pro.

Kuo has previously stated that the iPhone 14 Pro models' camera quality will "elevate mobile phone camera photography to a new level."

Apple's annual fall iPhone event is expected to take place in September, as it does almost every year, with the phones arriving shortly after. Until then, we can only rely on these predictions.
