Manchester United has reportedly entered the race to sign Juventus and Italy forward Federico Chiesa, adding another twist to the summer transfer saga. The Red Devils are set to compete with Liverpool and Newcastle United, who have also shown interest in the Juventus star.
Chiesa, 25, has had a mixed 2022/23 season due to a long-term injury and a reportedly strained relationship with Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri. Despite these challenges, Chiesa's talent is undeniable. He is regarded as one of the best forwards in Italian football, known for his versatility and ability to play on either wing or as a second striker.
The Turin giants are currently looking to raise at least €100 million (£87m) from outgoings and are willing to allow Chiesa to leave for €50m (£43m) this summer. This move comes as Juventus seeks to balance its books amidst financial pressures.
Manchester United's interest in Chiesa adds another layer to the club's summer transfer plans. The club is close to officially announcing the capture of Inter Milan stopper Andre Onana and Atalanta frontman Rasmus Hojlund remains a major priority for Erik ten Hag, the new manager at Old Trafford.
However, the potential acquisition of Chiesa could be seen as a strategic move rather than a necessity. United already boasts a number of flexible forward players, including Jadon Sancho and Antony. But a fully fit Chiesa is a class act who would arguably walk into the current United side, most probably on the right wing in place of the under-pressure duo.
Despite his injury issues, Chiesa ended last season on a bright note, notching four goal contributions in his final five outings. However, his fitness has been a concern for some period of time. If United does make an actual offer for Chiesa, it's more likely to be in the region of £30m, given these injury concerns.
The race for Chiesa's signature is set to heat up as the summer transfer window progresses. With Manchester United now in the mix, it will be interesting to see where the Italian forward will end up next season.
