China's aim of becoming more involved in international affairs is on track as recently, the nation called for lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. China said that this can be achieved with a strong peace mechanism in place, as well as denuclearization-a request it shares with the US.
This desire was echoed by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi. The foreign minister, US News says, had high hopes that the US and North Korea would continue the talks they have started during a summit in June, which both parties lauded to have gone as smoothly as can be. He also said that he hoped the talks would eventually end up with both parties agreeing to end hostilities.
China, North Korea, and the US are signatories to an armistice that ended the Korean War. However, as it is an armistice, the Southern and Northern portions of the Korean peninsula are still at war, technically. With no peace treaty signed by both countries, the situation remained complicated to this day.
Telegraph UK reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un heeded China's call to peace. The North Korean leader was quoted to have agreed to work with Beijing in order to finally realize true, lasting peace in the Korean peninsula.
Kim said the statement during a visit to Beijing to meet with Chinese president Xi Jinping. China, for its part, seeks a greater role in brokering the peace between Korea's North and South. The former Cold War compatriots also discussed North Korea's promise to finally get rid of all nuclear weapons.
The North Korean leader said he hoped to work with China in forging a new future for his country. It is also believed that, among other things, the two leaders discussed what occurred during the Singapore summit, where US president Donald Trump met with the North Korean leader and managed to secure his promise of denuclearization in exchange for security concessions.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi continued to answer questions fielded to him by saying that he echoed the Chinese president's hope of pushing forward to an iron-clad peace mechanism that keeps both the North and the South at peace with each other. It seems that it's a question of when, and not if since Kim Jong-un reassured president Xi Jinping during the meeting that he will do his best to make all of his promises happen.
