Huawei is expected to unveil the successor to the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro in the Huawei Mate 20. The forecasted launch date is the last quarter of 2018 and much of the official specs have yet to officially come out in the open.

While most of the anticipated specs have been resigned to the rumor mill, latest firmware files may provide consumers with a glimpse of things to come. Thanks to some folks over at XDA Developers who obtained some firmware files of the Mate 20 aka “Hima” together with some photo renders, some of the key specs have come out into the open.

Among the key external specs for the Huawei Mate 20 include seeing a device sporting a 6.3-inch AMOLED display (2240 x 1080 pixel) carrying a water-drop notch. Aside from that, the device will also have stereo speakers on the top and bottom of the phone and still have the traditional 3.5 mm audio jack beside the USB-C port. Similar to the Mate 10, the sequel is expected to support HDMI out.

As far as the cameras of the Huawei Mate 20, it is expected to feature triple cameras similar to the P20 Pro. However, they will be positioned differently. Instead of being placed vertically on the far left side of the device, the three cameras are arranged in a square-like manner and now placed at the middle of the device, Gizmo China said.

While the new placement of the cameras should be something to look forward to, it alters the usual positioning for some components. This includes the usual rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and also the logos. Being sample renders, it is possible that these may have been hidden by protective covers. If not, it is possible that this is not the final design with the company still potentially figuring out the proper dimensions and placement of the missing components.

On the inside, the Huawei Mate 20 is anticipated to come powered by a Kirin 980 chipset backed by 6 GB of RAM. It will also come with 128 GB of internal storage, bank on a 4,200 mAh battery (likely to support wireless charging) and come armed with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box.

An official launch date for the Huawei Mate 20 has yet to be announced although most expect this to be made soon. This could happen at IFA 2018 in Berlin where Huawei is expected to introduce the Kirin 980 chipset – the same device expected to power the successor to the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.
