Hong Kong is considered to be the place overflowing with milk and honey. It is for people who seek greener pastures and a bright future for their family. It is the home of people who risk going overseas to serve and work for the Hong Kong residents. However, there are some situations that are deemed uncontrollable and dangerous. Just recently, news regarding a domestic helper putting detergent into her boss' drink easily surfaced online.
Domestic Helpers in Hong Kong
According to the South China Morning Post, a domestic helper was arrested last Sunday after her boss reported to the police about this unforeseen incident. The boss told that the helper put on a detergent powder to her drink; making it poisonous and dangerous. The employer easily contacted the police officers; making the whole process fast and immediate.
The helper is currently facing charges after she tried to poison her boss with the possibility of killing her. The woman is still subject to thorough investigation, and the police officers promised that they would get through this immediately. The whole incident would be asked and investigated for officials to get to the root of everything.
The boss felt nauseous after the incident and was advised to have her health check immediately. Other than this case, there are still many domestic helpers that are facing criminal charges in Hong Kong.
Just recently, another domestic helper was arrested after she was allegedly reported to put bleach into the bath solution of her boss' kids. The mother of the kids instantly called the police when she felt a minor burn while preparing the bath.
Meanwhile, another domestic helper was deemed free from the charges pressed against her. The helper was mistakenly accused of putting urine in the water of her boss. After a careful investigation, no amount of urine was traced in the water sample; proving that the boss had false claims against the helper.
Governments Take on Domestic Helper
A large amount of Hong Kong's population goes to their domestic helper. In the recent statistics given by the government, 380,000 domestic workers comprise the whole workforce of the country. By 2047, experts are seeing that the number of domestic helpers will skyrocket to 600,000 as the Hong Kong population gets bigger.
99 percent of these domestic helpers are women and 47 percent of them came from the Philippines. EJ Insight also reported that helpers are asking for an increase in their salaries. The government is taking all necessary measures to make sure that the rights of both employers and employees are fulfilled.
