Nissan currently seems to be energized to launch a number of electric cars throughout its global markets. The company sees China as a big destination for this motif, as it began the production of its first electric sedan designed for the country.
According to northwest asianweekly, while famous vehicle manufacturers like General Motors and Volkswagen had already opted to launch electric sedans, minivans, and SUVs dedicated to Chinese population, Nissan was still relying on imported editions or electrified versions of models made by its Chinese partners. As a result, low-cost local car manufacturers like BYD Auto were taking over the market with their electric vehicles. However, the Chinese government is also interested in electric vehicles as these consume less energy and produce less carbon emission.
The government even launched some tax reduction schemes recently for the owners of electric cars and energy-efficient vehicles, as in this way the country may get rid of the smog-choked environment. Keeping up with the pace, Nissan also announced its pioneer electric car for China: 'Sylphy Zero Emission'. The car is based on the concept of Nissan Leaf. Nissan Motor Co. alongside its Chinese partner: Dongfeng Motor group., has started the production of the car on August 27.
Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa stated: "We're confident that the Sylphy Zero Emission rolling off the production line today will become a main player in the EV market,'' "We're going to roll out a range of EVs that will appeal to customers within all market segments.'' he added. Electrek quoted that Nissan's Sylphy Zero Emission will hold a price tag around USD 24,000, along with government subsidies lined for it.
Saikawa further stated "Growth in the Chinese market is a critical part of Nissan's midterm plan, Nissan M.O.V.E. to 2022. China is already the world's largest automotive market. But China isn't just a leader in terms of market size: It stands at the forefront of the development of the industry itself. The market is now evolving extremely quickly, especially in the areas of electrification and connectivity."
"In fact, China is expected to lead the world in the adoption and spread of EVs in the coming years. We're confident that the Sylphy Zero Emission rolling off the production line today will become a main player in the EV market here. It's going to pave the way for our Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy in the Chinese market," he concluded. The base model of the electric car will cost a Chinese buyer about 166,000 yuan, to be precise.
