Chris Evans is not hanging his Captain America shield just yet. That is, according to Avengers 4 director Joe Russo.
Evans seemingly bid goodbye to his character when he reminisced about his days as the super soldier in a tweet. Since then, fans had expressed their dismay and sadness that he will be leaving the Marvel franchise.
However, Russo may have a different interpretation of the actor's tweet. The filmmaker teased in a recent interview with the Associated Press that Evans is still going to play Captain America. He also asked fans to wait and see what he means when the movie airs in theaters.
"He's not done yet. And I don't want explain what that means but the audience will soon understand what I'm talking about."
Evans wrapped up filming for Avengers 4 early in October and took to social media to thank everyone. He thanked the fans and everyone involved in the film for their continued support. He also said at the time that it was an emotional moment for him, to which Russo agreed that it was but did not elaborate.
"I think it was more emotional for him than us."

As far as Evans is concerned, his time as Captain America is over. He said so himself in an interview with the New York Times in March. The actor hinted that he has no plans to return to the franchise.
"You want to get off the train before they push you off."
It was also during this interview that the 36-year old Boston native shared his expectation that it was time to hang his shield. He said that the reshoots for Avengers 4 in the Fall marked the end of his tenure as Captain America. Coincidentally, his cryptic tweet came around Fall.
Regardless, Russo may be talking about Captain America's tenure in the franchise and not the actor's. After all, other men took over the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers in the Marvel comics. There is long-held speculation that either Cap's best friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) or The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) will don on the iconic red, white and blue super suit next.
The director may have agreed that it was emotional for Evans because it was time to pass on his shield. If this is so, then it could mean that Captain America lives in Avengers 4.
