Luke Perry was rushed in the hospital on Wednesday morning, Feb 27, as he suffered from a massive stroke. Because of the sensitivity of his condition, Luke Perry's condition is still being observed and there were no other updates that followed. It was only reported that the '90's teen heartthrob is currently sedated as a part of his treatment for the stroke.
To further understand and avoid the occurrence of stroke, 3 doctors were able to explain in their simplest non-medical term as possible in order to know what causes this stroke and how to treat it. For those who want to help others and also be aware of what is going on to their bodies, Dr. Dexter Sun, a neurologist, and two California-based cardiologists - Dr. Steven Tabak from Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, Dr. Reed Wilson from Beverly Hills will tell the signs to a stroke so that the patient will be able to receive proper medical attention the soonest possible time. It is also great to know this as this can be a tool to save lives.
What happened to Luke Perry, reports and his rep has only said that he experienced a massive stroke. Although there is two types of stroke as per Dr. Sun, the Hemorrhagic stroke which is a bleeding kind of stroke and an Ischemic stroke wherein there is the accumulation of big clot or embolus in the blood vessels. Now there are different approaches of treatment to these kinds of stroke, like for Hemorrhagic stroke, which is most of the time due to Hypertension, certain hypertensive drugs are given to maintain the normal blood pressure, while others receive undergo a craniotomy. For Ischemic stroke, there is treatment with TPA (dissolve the blood clot), or anticoagulation versus antiplatelet treatment depends on different types of the ischemic stroke.
It was reported that the Riverdale star was put into a coma, however, that is not true since it is also another way to treat a stroke, but another kind of approach was done to Perry. Perhaps the warning signs were easily seen on Luke Perry, and also news of him going to the hospital bit more frequent may have helped in the speedy response to get help. If Perry had already these signs like sudden onset of facial weakness, difficulty of speech, arm or leg weakness, numbness in arm or leg, rushing him to the hospital was the best way to do, the same advise said by Dr. Wilson although neither he or Dr. Tabak have treated the Beverly Hills, 90210 star.
Dr. Sun further elaborates that medically induced coma is introduced by medications and it is reversible just so that the brain tissue in the stroke area is protected by reducing activity and metabolic demand since it is the part that has inadequate blood flow. However, because of his immediate rescue, Luke Perry was sedated instead which is a lighter procedure, usually done to prevent the patient from having seizures or from moving. The current treatment is often administering a medicine called TPA [tissue plasminogen activator], one of the so-called clot-busting drugs that can help to dissolve the clot and restore blood flow to the brain in an effort to minimize the long term damage that's done to the brain. From this knowledge also, the feeling of hope that Luke Perry's condition will improve will weigh more than the fear it has brought because of speculation in reporting the wrong procedure done to him.
