It's going to be a long wait for the airing of Fargo season 4. The FX crime drama is yet to start filming later this year since creator Noah Hawley has always said Fargo is a "winter show" with lots of cold and snow.
FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed during the Television Critics Association session that Fargo season 4 will start production in winter 2019. The actual premiere date has not yet been set but Landgraf said knowing the production schedule should give avid viewers a time frame of the show's release date.
While working on Fargo season 3 in 2015, Hawley said that this is a "winter show for better or worse." The cold setting is part and parcel of what makes the series a standout so it's imperative that they filmed during this season.
Hawley once again reiterated in 2018 that viewers will have to wait for Fargo season 4 "mostly just because it is a winter show." Consequently, Hawley couldn't work on the new installment faster since he still had commitments to finish writing Legion season 3 and two movies - Doctor Doom and Pale Blue Dot.
The long wait, however, is not unusual. Fargo season 1, which was commissioned in 2012, began filming in late 2013 and launched on FX in April 2014. Fargo season 2 received a greenlit quite early and since Hawley had an easier schedule then, production started in winter 2014. That installment was on television by October 2015.
Fargo season 3, on the other hand, started production in January 2017. Viewers saw the show by April of that same year. Given this pattern, it's likely that Fargo season 4 may be on FX around April 2020.
Chris Rock has been cast as the lead of Fargo season 4 as early as August 2018. The actor will play the boss of a crime family based in Kansas City in the 1950s. The story will center on the tension between the Italian mob and the African American gang.
The next installment's filming will likely move from Calvary, the location of the last three seasons, to Kansas. While that might seem odd for the show's fans, Landgraf stated that there is snow in this midwestern city.
The distinctive accent is also quite important to any Fargo story just like the cold and the snow. With that, Landgraf said, "I think Noah would have to answer the question about the accent because he and Chris will be the ones to figure it out."
