All Shrek movies were and are loved by both kids and adults. From its professedly perfect cast and witty humor, it seems that there is nothing not to love about the Shrek franchise. And with this apparent adoration for the movie at hand, a lot of fans are asking why it took almost a decade before Shrek 5 made it to the headlines.
Some people suspected that the Shrek franchise would no longer sell its material since a lot more films like Moana and Frozen are getting all of the attention these past few years. And since there were no updates about the next installment of the franchise, it seems that the said speculations became the notion of many.
But surprisingly in 2016, NBC Universal purchased DreamWorks Animation. Upon purchasing, Steve Burke, the chief of NBC Universal, has shared his plans of reviving several DreamWorks films which includes the Shrek franchise. And this is why a few months later, it has been announced that the development of Shrek 5 is already set in motion.
According to DreamWorks Fandom, the story and script were already finished in the latter months of 2016. Also, these materials are written by the Austin Powers writer, Michael McCullers.
In 2017, Michael McCullers was interviewed for Boss Baby which was his current project at that time. During the interview, there were questions asked about the fifth installment of the Shrek franchise as well. The writer stated that Shrek 5 would be the first Shrek movie of DreamWorks under NBC Universal. And since it's already on its fifth installment, a reinvention of material is very much needed.
As for the cast, there is no confirmation yet if Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles as Shrek and Princess Fiona, respectively. But many fans believed that they would return. On the other hand, Eddie Murphy has confirmed that he'll be returning as Donkey in the upcoming film. He also shared in an interview that they are currently doing the movie.
Now, it is believed that the fifth movie of the franchise will be released in between 2019 and 2020. However, the first quarter of 2019 has almost passed, and there are no teasers or trailers yet around the media.
So, this leaves many fans in question if it will still push through this year. But even so, many believe that Shrek 5 will make it to the theaters on either the third or fourth quarter of 2019.
