During the WWDC 2019, Apple CEO Tim Cook compared the high-adoption rate of iOS 12 to Android Pie. The CEO underlined that the iOS 12 was already installed on 85 percent of compatible devices while the Android Pie has, so far, reached around 10 percent adoption rate. With both operating systems currently at their Beta stages, it is interesting to see how Android Q and iOS 13 will vie to catch the consumers' attention. Let us take a look at some for the biggest features of these OS and see how they stack up in terms of new features.
Dark Mode
Google integrated the Dark Theme mode to its Android Pie software but it is limited to several aspects of the software. But, Google confirmed that Android Q will be a system-wide dark theme. On the other hand, Apple added the Dark More to its Mac computers last year with the release of the macOS Mojave. This year, the Cupertino-based tech titan unveiled at the WWDC 2019 that its dark mode works everywhere from Calendar to messages to widgets and notifications. We have yet to see the dark theme mode of Android Q.
User Privacy
According to Apple CEO Tim Cook iOS, 13 will offer users more control over the location permission on apps. Additionally, it will feature a new feature called Sign in with Apple that provides the user access to accounts and apps without the need to give away the email address. This way, the user is protected from third-party apps that are used to monitor the user's online behavior.
On the other hand, Google's user privacy is more on the targeted ads of the user data. Unlike Apple who has shown important improvements and has even go beyond the usual path, Google has been underlining user privacy for several months but fails to go beyond the usual. But, with Android Q, Google is offering users more control over the kind of data they share with different services and apps. In addition, users can limit the access of an app to their location.
Moreover, Android Q will also feature Scoped Storage that allows users to control how apps can gain access to their internal storage of the device. It will also prohibit access to device identifiers. Interestingly, it will randomize the MAC address when the users connect their device to various WiFi networks.
Siri vs. Google Assistant
Since the introduction of Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, the popular digital assistant of Apple devices has been left behind in almost all aspects. In 2018, Apple improved Siri by adding Siri Shortcuts in the iOS 12. But, with the arrival of iOS 13, Siri is given a massive update. Siri will now sound more natural and will no longer speak with gaps and clipped voices. Siri Suggestions is also included in the iOS 13 and users can create customized shortcuts using the Shortcuts app for Siri.
With several years ahead in terms of advancement, Google Assistant already has a natural voice and is much better at recognizing the user's voice. According to the search engine giant, Google Assistant will become better at providing personalized services. In fact, with the right data, users can ask Google assistant to remind you to buy something and will instantly set the reminder for you.
