The smartphone currently having the highest number of rear cameras is the Nokia 9 PureView with its five cameras. But this record may soon be stolen from the brand as Sony is said to be working on a brand-new smartphone with six rear cameras.

The latest rumors suggest that the Japanese company is working on a new Xperia model that boasts six cameras. We got this juicy update from Max J. on Twitter. The leakster also said that the phone is still under development, so there's no way of knowing other significant info. He did post an image though, based on a concept that features the 6 cameras at the back of the phone, which should be organized as follows:

  • 20 MP, F / 2.4

  • 48 MP, F / 1.2 - F / 2.4

  • 16 MP, F / 2.4

  • 8 MP, F / 2.4

  • 12 MP F / 1.2 - F / 2.4

  • 0.5 MP TOF

We're not sure yet how Sony intends to use these cameras, but judging by the sensors found on the image, the upcoming smartphone should not be missing a wide-angle sensor, a ToF sensor, a telephoto lens, and maybe a double monochromatic sensor to enhance the details in pictures taken in low-light conditions.

This unconfirmed Sony smartphone features a 48MP sensor with a variable aperture of f/1.2 and f/2.4. This should be the primary camera. It will also have a 12MP cam with similar variable aperture. Then there's the 20MP camera, a 16MP camera, and an 8MP camera all having an f/2.4 aperture. The sixth camera is said to be a 0.5MP ToF sensor.

The type of lens the main five cameras haven't been revealed yet, but we can only assume there is an ultra-wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. Hopefully, a monochrome lens is added as well. As for the front-casing cameras, there are two - a 0.3MP ToF sensor and a 10MP sensor.

The renders show the phone will have a 21:9 aspect ratio and a rectangular housing for the six cameras. We're not seeing a fingerprint scanner at the back of the phone, so we're assuming it can be found on the side or under the display. Who knows, Sony may put on a surprise.

Among other things, we're hoping the phone comes with a 4K display, a Snapdragon 855 processor and a huge battery life. Again, these are all unconfirmed, but Sony is not denying things either. We're assuming a statement from the company will appear soon.
