It sure is a productive week for the jailbreak community as two jailbreaking tools have been bumped up that expands the coverage to iOS 12.2 and 12.3. Previously, iOS 12 was unlocked up to version 12.1.2 only, but with unc0ver and Team Electra advancing a bit, hopes are high there will be more exciting developments to come.
First to drop, per iClarified was the Chimera Jailbreak version 1.2.3, which according to its maker will be able to modify iOS devices running on A9 to A11 processors. According to Team Electra, Chimera will unlock iOS 12 starting from the original release up to version 12.3.
It must be noted, however, that jailbreaking iOS 12.3 will only work on specific beta versions so be guided accordingly.
As for the unc0ver jailbreak, it is now on version 3.3.0 and will customized iOS devices with processing chips starting from A7 to A11. And that translates to jailbreak support beginning from the initial iOS 12 release going to version 12.2
In a separate report, iClarified said the highlight feature for the unc0ver is the Sock Puppet exploit that allowed a wider coverage of the tool. Most importantly, the upgrade comes with an optimization that ensures better performance for would-be users.
In a Twitter post, unc0ver team leader @Pwn20wnd shared: "I have just done some crazy optimizations to the unc0ver jailbreak and got it to run in 2 seconds with the exploit."
The dev likewise indicated that unc0ver 3.3.0 now supports iOS 12.2 thanks to the tfp0 exploit that was shared by Ned Williamson.
Specifically, the new jailbreak was released with the following changelog:
Beta 1
- Add the Sock Puppet exploit for iOS 12.0-12.2 support on A7-A11 devices
- Remove the empty_list and multi_path exploits
- Replace the kernel exploit segmented switch with picker view
- Add code substitution platform picker view
Beta 2
- Fix all preferences being off by default
For those interested the jailbreaking tools can be obtained through the following download links - for the Chimera jailbreak here and for the unc0ver jailbreak here.
As indicated by @Pwn20wnd, it is possible that another beta release of the unc0ver jailbreak will be forthcoming soon, but it needs to be clarified that whatever will be provided are for the purpose of optimization only. That would mean the update is mostly for a performance boost.
And that's like saying this will be the final step up for iOS 12 jailbreak as it is more likely that hacking groups have turned their attention into cracking iOS 13. This was evident with the tfp0 exploit that Luca Todesco had discovered and shared recently. An iOS 13 jailbreak release is not expected though until the final cut gets out this coming September or October.
