Following the airing of the Big Little Lies season 2 finale this July, fans have been wondering if the show will get a third season. Earlier reports suggest that HBO may have canceled the series but stars like Nicole Kidman (as Celeste) and Shailene Woodley (as Jane) hint that it's not over till it's over.

In an interview with TV Line, HBO boss Casey Bloys said that while he would love to see the cast back together for Big Little Lies season 3, it's going to take a lot for this to happen again. All of the stars have other commitments, and Kidman is going to work on her next series with HBO, The Undoing.

Kidman, on the other hand, has more or less the same sentiments about having Big Little Lies season 3. She told E! News that there are lots of ideas for the new season so creating new storylines isn't the problem. However, she also said she would not do the show if the original stars won't be involved, down to the child actors that form part of the show.

Woodley expressed her hope for a third season, per Entertainment Tonight. When asked by a fan if there's a Big Little Lies season 3, Woodley said that she hopes it will happen.

Ultimately, however, the decision will be up to HBO. Bloys did say that they have planned out Big Little Lies season 2 to end by fully satisfying the fans. Co-creator David E. Kelley wrote this installment with the idea of a concrete ending in mind.

For now, there are no plans being hatched for Big Little Lies season 3. However, this was also the same scenario when everyone involved in the show was doing the first season. They also didn't think a renewal was likely, but it materialized.

Meanwhile, Big Little Lies season 2's finale drew huge numbers for HBO, per Variety. Averaging 12 million viewers per episode, the series remains a certified hit.

However, there were reports that behind-the-scenes drama involving director Andrea Arnold marred the production of Big Little Lies season 2. According to IndieWire, the helmer was stripped off her creative control during the editing process.

Sources said that unknown to the director, the scenes she shot were edited to match the feel and mood of the first season, which was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. The director declined to comment on the issue, but HBO stated in a press release via The Hollywood Reporter that the network bosses are proud of Arnold's work as the director of Big Little Lies season 2.
