In an interview in March, Huawei Consumer Business CEO Richard Yu said that his default device was the Huawei Mate X. He added that the device had served him quite well, especially when doing work-related tasks. He said that the Mate X is perfect for looking through charts, graphs, and browsing the Internet. Despite this, Huawei decided to pull back the official release of the Mate X as a precautionary measure to avoid hardware failures like the one that has plagued the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
More recently, the Huawei CEO was spotted using the Mate X while waiting for his flight at Shenzhen International airport. Despite the fact that the Mate X is still unreleased, he did not deter from using it. In fact, rather than hide the device from sight, he allowed the photographer to get some close-up shots of the device. The photos were then circulated to a number of Chinese social media platforms. However, there are reports claiming that it originated from Weibo.
The Huawei Mate X is expected to be released in September. The original release date was pulled back in order to perform necessary hardware checks. Huawei's decision to do so stem from the disastrous release of the Galaxy Fold. In order to prevent such kind of hardware disaster, Huawei instead quietly canceled the release and work on further upgrades in order to prevent problems that have plagued the Galaxy Fold.
Recently, the Huawei Mate X was reportedly certified by TENAA, China's version of the FCC. TENAA certification is usually sign that a device or smartphone is finally cleared of all hardware and software checks. A certification also points out to a near release of the device in China. Almost any device that hits the Chinese market passes through TENAA certification.
Not much is known about the Huawei Mate X. Reports and rumors claim that the phone will have a foldable design. It will sport an 8-inch OLED display which can be folded to a 6.6-inch and 6-38 inch displays on either panel. If there is one glaring flaw that all foldable phones have, it is the weird aspect ratio.
At the heart of the Mate X is the Kirin 980 processor which was developed in-house by Huawei. It has 12GB of RAM and 512GB internal storage. The phone is reportedly 5G ready right out of the box. It is expected to run on Android 9.0 with Huawei's own EMUI skin on top.
