Best-selling author and show creator Neil Gaiman is not yet sure if there will be a follow up to Good Omens, whose first season dropped on the Amazon streaming platform last May 31, 2019. He has expressed that he might not be behind the show if Amazon decides to renew Good Omens season 2.
Speaking with Daily Express, Gaiman said writing and developing Good Omens for television took him some four to five years to complete. He was so focused on this project that he didn't have time to do other work.
Things have changed for Gaiman, however, since his books have been making its way to television. Aside from Good Omens, he has American Gods on Starz and he is developing the upcoming TV adaptation to The Sandman. Thus, if Good Omens season 2 happens, Gaiman might have to beg off from working on the show.
"I have a wife who has not seen enough of me for the last few years and is looking forward to me being at home," he said.
Aside from spending some time with his family, Gaiman also said that he would like to go back to being a novelist. He hasn't published a new book since 2013.
Amazon bosses have recently told the press that they would love to continue with Good Omens season 2. They are also willing to wait for Gaiman to come up with the material.
"It's in Neil's hands now but we'd love to do it, Amazon's Vernon Sanders said, per Deadline. "We're finding that it just takes a little time, perhaps, in the case of Neil. But whatever he wants to do, we're interested in."
Good Omens was published in the 1990s and there was, in fact, a sequel to the books that never materialized since Pratchett died. The series, on the other hand, starred Michael Sheen and David Tennant who played the angel Aziraphale and the devil Crowley, respectively. Their characters have an unusual friendship despite being on opposing sides.
Gaiman told The Wrap that the unfinished sequel had so many potential storylines for Good Omens season 2. For instance, Archangel Gabriel (played by Jon Hamm) could have more exposure since he was only a supporting character in the first season. Additionally, Crowley and Aziraphale could be inserted anywhere in history and there would still be a story to it.
Meanwhile, Amazon won't reveal how Good Omens fared on the platform in terms of viewership. Its bosses, however, hinted that the shows that premiered this year, including Good Omens, have significantly boosted their subscription.
