Sony's next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 5, is anticipated to arrive in 2020. But, so far, the Japanese gaming console maker has yet to officially launch the much-awaited iteration to its successful gaming console series. So far, we already know some of the specs and features of the upcoming console, but Sony's boss Jim Ryan recently shared a new killer feature that even environmentalist will love.
Sony has recently announced that the PlayStation 5 will be released with a brand new power-saving mode. The new technology will act as a general anesthetic of some kind and will send the PlayStation 5 into a deep sleep when not in use. As a result, the next generation gaming console will only consume around 0.5W of power compared to the 8.5W consumed by its predecessor, the PlayStation 4.
Although it may not sound like the most significant difference in the world, it definitely is. It is worth noting that Sony has sold 100 million units of PlayStation 4 to date. This means that when these consoles are put to rest, each consumes 8.5W, which is equivalent to 850 million watts burned each day. If you compare that with the PlayStation 5, the device will just consume roughly 50 million watts.
Last September 23, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan explained that the PlayStation 5 will have the possible ability to suspend gameplay with lower power consumption compared to PS4. The president added that if this feature is enabled by one million PS5 users, it could save energy equivalent to the average electricity use of 1000 homes in the US. Furthermore, the changes will take effect when the next generation gaming console is on standby, which means the overall gaming experience of the user will not be affected.
While this killer feature might give PlayStation 5 users an extra second or two to wake up the gaming console, but this, in its own way, saves the world. It a minor seatback compared to several other jaw-dropping features that Sony has reportedly equipped the PlayStation 5. In addition to the power-saving mode, the PlayStation 5 is said to have the ability to deliver jaw-dropping visuals and has a solid-state drive.
The ability of PlayStation 5 to provide amazing visuals was recently confirmed by the dev of "Ghost of Tsushima." Meanwhile, "Tamarin" dev shared that the solid-state drive of PlayStation 5 will make it easier to concentrate on what is fun and important. It will also change the way gamers enjoy their games and will revolutionize the gaming industry.
