Gamma (played by Thora Birch) is joining the Whisperers in The Walking Dead season 10. To be introduced in the second episode, which will air on Sunday, Oct. 13, on AMC, she's loyal to Alpha (played by Samantha Morton) but defiant against Beta (played by Ryan Hurst), who doesn't hide the fact that he believes Gamma will be a problem.
In a teaser for The Walking Dead season 10 episode 2, Beta tells Alpha that Gamma "unsettles the pack." Alpha, however, pays no heed to what Beta said and reminded her co-leader not to doubt her hold on her people.
Does Beta have the right read on Gamma though? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Angela Kang said that Gamma is kind of a badass and, despite being new, she will definitely rise among the ranks as a loyal follower of the Whisperers in The Walking Dead season 10.
Gamma's story will breathe new life to the long-running franchise. Kang said that telling the story of this cult opens new conflicts that highlight the "interesting human landscape."
The Whisperers' presence in The Walking Dead season 10 will show whether people within the cult are for the cause 100 percent or just actually drifting along in order to survive this new and horrific world. Paranoia and groups in factions will also erupt, which will test the true believers.
The Walking Dead season 10 episode 2 will delve more into the Whisperers journey from Oceanside to Alexandria. Thus, the face-off between Alpha and Carol from the first episode, which aired on Oct. 6, will have to wait for a few more episodes.
There's another clash that fans of the series can look forward to in The Walking Dead season 10. Kang confirmed that Beta and Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will also have an encounter in an upcoming episode.
At this point, Negan is still stuck in Alexandria as a prisoner who can go around the lot uncaged. The actor confirmed on Talking Dead that he had screen time with quite a few new people this season.
In the comic series the show is based from, Negan, the former villain, became the unlikely savior of the rest of the survivors in their war against the Whisperers. Morgan said that he was actually eager to play up this storyline between Negan and Beta in the series.
Interestingly, Morgan and Hurst have been friends for a long time in real life. They met while filming an episode of JAG more than 20 years ago.
