The Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly working on a tile-like Bluetooth tracking device designed to be linked to items like wallets and keys so it could be tracked. This said device is called Apple AirTag and allows users to find their things linked to the rumored device right on the Find My app. The news about this new device Apple is reportedly working on first surfaced when MacRumors discovered assets and trademarking details in iOS 13.2.
It appears that Apple is planning to call the tracking device as Apple AirTag. At this point, the Cupertino-based tech giant will have to confirm the existence of the rumored tracking accessory, but many tech enthusiasts believe that it is already in development. Now, we may have new information on when Apple plans to launch the alleged tracking device and what it plans to officially call it.
9to5 mac first reported about Apple AirTag when Guilherme Rambo first spotted the name on iOS 13.2. According to the report, there is a particular folder in the file system of the software named AirTag. There is also a video asset dubbed as BatterySwap within the said folder, which could be a walkthrough on how to change the batteries of the rumored Apple tracking accessory.
It seems that the folders and assets seem to appear as placeholders at this point, but they contain images of Apple products that were already released, such as HomePod and AirPods. Because of this, they do not give more details about the upcoming Bluetooth tracking accessory aside from the potential moniker. Interestingly, the images discovered in the iOS 13.2 build reveal that Apple AirTag is a small and round white tag with an Apple logo in front.
The AirTag will be presumably attached to items through adhesive or through an attachment point like a ring or chain. It is also possible that it could be used in multiple items. According to reports, Apple AirTag will show in the new Items tab in the Find My app.
As for the price, there is no official word yet on how much the upcoming tracking accessory will cost. However, similar products from other companies like Tile are usually retailed between $25 and $35 for one Bluetooth tracker. In terms of release date, it is not yet clear when the Apple AirTag will hit the market.
So far, Apple has not yet confirmed its existence, so it is not yet clear when it is going to arrive. However, several sites believe that Apple AirTag might be released before the year ends or in the early part of 2020.
