This Is Us season 4 episode 9 recently aired on NBC, with the titled "So Long, Marianne." This episode featured a Thanksgiving dinner of the Pearson family in Philadelphia, but the reunion didn't go well as each of them face their issues. Kate and Toby are the concern here as the flash-forward scene hints the two aren't together anymore.
This Is Us season 4 episode 9 aired on Tuesday, Nov. 19, and this will be the final one this 2019 as the series goes on a midseason break. This episode focused on everyone's struggles with their personal lives and relationships, with Kate having to face the reality of her now-fit husband, Toby. She told Beth that she hates the CrossFit Toby, and the latter urged her to tell him what she feels to save their marriage.
Kate tried to express her feelings to Toby, but she chickened out. At the end of This Is Us season 4 episode 9, Kate accidentally saw a text message exchange on Toby's phone. She was stunned when she read the message, apparently from a woman, saying: "Don't let her bring you down. Here for you." She assumed that they're talking about her, and this could be a problem for their marriage.
In the closing minutes of the episode, a flash-forward scene of the Big Three's 40th birthday party was shown. It looks like Kate and Toby weren't together anymore as she signed the police form "Kate Pearson" after the police dropped off Rebecca. Viewers also know that the longer flash-forward showed Toby arriving alone to visit Rebecca. These flash-forwards suggest they separated already.
Meanwhile, the good news in This Is Us season 4 episode 9 is that the flash-forward also hints Kevin is engaged and his fiancé is pregnant. However, the scene also teased that he and Randall were no longer talking. This made some viewers curious, considering how they have been close at times. Also, Nicky is more part of the family now, and his shrimp tradition at Thanksgiving has adapted by the adult Baby Jack.
In another related report, the release date of This Is Us season 4 episode 10 was not yet revealed. But, The Futon Critic noted that new episodes would likely drop on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020.
