A few days ago, an unexpected leak surfaced online, announcing that one of the most awaited smartphones arriving in 2020 will feature the most significant innovation in the industry in years. Huawei France tweeted that Huawei P40 will house a graphene battery, which is not only smaller than the regular lithium-ion battery pack but also packs bigger charges and backs faster wireless speed. This is one of the most surprising news considering that the industry has been waiting for it for a long time, but it appears that graphene battery innovation is not after all happening in 2020.

For the uninitiated, graphene batteries offer a plethora of benefits than lithium-ion batteries. While many innovations happen for smartphones, it appears that the innovation in the battery was always out of the headline. And, it seems to be the case next year since the unexpected leak for the Huawei P40 series might not be happening in 2020 after all.

Huawei France said that the Huawei P40 series would feature a graphene battery pack, but the post was taken down. In a separate report, Huawei Vice President of Mobile Li Xiaolong informed China Business News (via ITHome), that the report was not true. Huawei France later said it would not make a comment on speculations and rumors.

However, it seems very strange to see Huawei France post something that it later claims to be a rumor about a feature for a product that is not yet released or officially revealed on an official social media account. It appears that for now, that dream of seeing graphene batteries on smartphones in 2020 is gone, for Huawei, at least. Rumors have it that Samsung's battery manufacturing division is working on graphene batteries that will power its upcoming Samsung Galaxy S12 flagship series in 2021.

Graphene batteries based on ongoing studies are capable of improving energy storage whine spiking the charging rate. In other words, it can recharge faster and offer reduced thickness. While it could be bad news to those who are looking forward to seeing a graphene battery-powered smartphone next year, 2021 is just a year away. Also, there are other exciting features that the Huawei P40 series will offer next year.

Aside from the possible Penta rear camera set up, the upcoming flagship smartphone series from Huawei will house Kirin 990 SoC. But, for now, although claims about the forthcoming flagship smartphone series from Huawei seem interesting, these are not official and are merely leaks. We recommend taking this information with a pinch of salt and with skepticism.
