There is little doubt that the adaptation of the André Aciman novel Call Me By Your Name was one of the surprise hits of 2017. Not surprisingly, the success of the film has led to demands for a sequel that would reunite Elio Perlman with Oliver. Luckily, it looks like Call Me By Your Name 2 is actually happening in the future. In addition to that, director Luca Guadagnino has confirmed that both Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer will reprise their roles as Elio and Oliver, respectively.
In Call Me By Your Name, the 17-year-old Elio Perlman falls in love with his father's research assistant Oliver during one summer in Italy. Despite the romance, Oliver announces during Hanukkah that he is engaged to be married. Sadly, the movie ends with the heartbroken Elio staring into a fireplace. However, his expression changes at the last minute as his mother calls him to dinner.
Despite the seemingly obvious conclusion, fans believe that there is still a story to tell after the events in Call Me By Your Name. Interestingly, it looks like director Luca Guadagnino agrees with people who think that Elio Perlman deserves a reunion with Oliver. The filmmaker has just confirmed that a planned sequel will bring back Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. While speaking to La Repubblica (via Variety), Guadagnino offered an update on what to expect in Call Me By Your Name 2.
"Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie," Guadagnino confirmed.
This is welcome news for fans who are looking forward to seeing Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer return as Elio Perlman and Oliver, respectively. In addition to that, it would be interesting to see more Esther Garrel's Marzia, who had a brief fling with Elio in Call Me By Your Name.
So what could happen in Call Me By Your Name 2? Author André Aciman actually wrote a sequel to the novel titled Find Me, which was released in 2019. However, it is unclear if Luca Guadagnino will adapt the second book or if the sequel will be a completely different story. Either way, fans are just excited about seeing Elio and Oliver together again.
