The Cupertino tech giant Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 12 line up sometime in Sept 2020. A recent leak from a reliable Apple tipster claimed that the iPhone 12 Pro max might feature a 120 Hz ProMotion display refresh rate. However, the claim was contested recently by a display analyst, who revealed a set of interesting details about the 120 Hz display refresh rate.

Display Supply Chain CEO Ross Young, in his official twitter account, disagreed with the recent leak about the display refresh rate of the iPhone 12. Earlier, Max Weinbach said that the iPhone 12 would feature a 120 Hz ProMotion Display refresh rate. But, Young claimed that in 2020 only one smartphone would be released with the LTPO technology, not from Apple.

Ross explained that for the smartphone maker to come up with a 120 Hz display refresh rate, "you need LTPO, which enables variable refresh so you can operate at 1Hz-120Hz and optimize battery life. Only one flagship phone will have LTPO. Will leak it tomorrow with display specs," the executive noted. Young also claimed that only the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Plus would feature a 120 Hz display refresh rate this year.

Later, the CEO shared more details about the display feature of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Plus. He said that the Galaxy Note 20 Plus "will grow from 6.8" to 6.87", the resolution will increase to 3096 x 1444, resulting in a 497 PPI, 19.3:9 aspect ratio. It will also have 120Hz refresh with LTPO, lowest power implementation of 120Hz due to variable refresh." He also clarified earlier claims that the base model Galaxy Note 20 would feature the same display refresh rate.

He noted that the standard Note 20 model would ship an LTPS panel with a 60 Hz display refresh rate. For the uninitiated, LTPO is a display component that enables devices to run at a wide range of refresh rates. In other words, it only requires to use the 120 Hz mode whenever necessary. For most of the smartphone's activities, the LTPO switches to a lower refresh rate.

While Young's claims may be accurate, it does not say that Apple could not produce the 120 Hz ProMotion display refresh rate. It is worth mentioning that the Cupertino tech giant was able to release the iPad Pro models with ProMotion display without the LTPO technology. It is safer to take this information about the display refresh rate of the iPhone 12 with a pinch of salt.
