It has been a while since there has been any updates on a follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road. Although the movie was released back in 2015, it seems like George Miller is taking his time to develop his next project. Luckily, the director finally has some good news for fans who have been waiting for five years. Miller confirmed that his next film will be a prequel that will focus on Charlize Theron's character Imperator Furiosa.
There is little doubt that Imperator Furiosa was the most charismatic character in Mad Max: Fury Road. Although the movie was supposed to focus on Tom Hardy's titular character, Furiosa stole the show and ultimately became the true star of the film. So it's no surprise that fans were hoping that the Mad Max sequel should focus on Charlize Theron's character. Luckily, George Miller agrees with the idea and revealed that it is his next project.
In an interview with The New York Times, George Miller confirmed that he is already casting the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel movie, which will be based on a script he had written while working on the 2015 film. Interestingly, the filmmaker revealed that the script was originally penned to help Charlize Theron and others learn about their characters' backstories. "It was purely a way of helping Charlize and explaining it to ourselves," Miller said.
So does this mean that Charlize Theron will be returning for the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel? George Miller stated that it is a prequel which means that it will feature a younger Furiosa and he had planned to bring Theron back through de-aging technology. However, he ultimately decided because he isn't satisfied with the results so far.
"Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there's still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there's still a pretty wide valley, I believe," Miller said of the de-aging technology. Sadly, this would mean that Furiosa will need to be recast with a younger actress.
For now, there hasn't been any official casting news connected to the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. Although it was previously reported that The New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy had met with George Miller, it has not yet been confirmed whether she accepted the role.
