After a few years of efficient service, it's expected that the trusty MacBook Pro or Air will slow down gradually that working with the machine would be inconvenient in many instances. It might be tempting to ditch the old device and just upgrade but doing some maintenance works could be the key to bring that Mac to its old glorious self.

Take note that one of the reasons a computer starts to become sluggish is the storage status; that is the internal disk could be running out of space. To confirm if this is the case, tap on the Apple logo of the MacBook drive and select About This Mac then check on the Storage. If the indicator shows a room approaching full capacity, then it's time to zap the unnecessary files.

CNET said doing this comes in four options and one is to migrate select files to the iCloud or let the Mac do the work by choosing Optimize Storage, in which case movie and television shows already viewed will be purged from the drive.

For good measure, however, it's best to Reduce Clutter by reviewing the large files that exist on the Mac storage and put them on the trash when no longer needed. To make sure these files will not occupy space on the drive, activate the option that says Empty Trash Automatically.

Slow down on a Mac can also be addressed by using the Disk Utility tool and run First Aid. This will check possible errors on disk partitions and start-up processes, and then perform the required corrections. To do this, the machine needs to restart in recovery mode and a user will only need to refer to Apple Support for instructions on the repair work.

Speed can be gained on the Mac as well by checking on applications that are resource hungry and kill off the same that were programmed to start during boot up. For example, Google Chrome is known to eat up RAM when in use so it might be good to go for Safari instead.

But the ultimate solution really in achieving optimal use of any Mac is to ensure that the operating system is always updated. It's a good thing that Apple provides MacOS for free so it would be wise to make the jump once the latest version is out.

To ensure that OS updates are installed automatically, set this by going to System Preferences then System Update. There, an option to Automatically Keep My Mac Up To Date can be found, and just check the box to activate it.

Now if all these tweaks still fail to satisfy, then the upgrade route indeed could be the best option. AppleInsider said the latest deal on the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2020 is hard to resist as the price tag is reduced by $320, which is a good saving any day of the week.

The package will bring the latest CPU generation, internal storage of 512GB, and 32GB of RAM.
