Rumors have been aplenty that Apple is poised to release a new MacBook Pro that will be the biggest in the family, on account of its 16-inch display screen. As expected, the new laptop will require more power to operate and preferably a faster charger to juice it up. This likely will be the case when the unit is unboxed.
If the reports coming from China are to be believed, part of the 16-inch MacBook Pro is a 96W USB-C power adapter that will be the biggest and fastest charger Apple will provide. The latest info was courtesy of Chongdiantou, which is considered as the Chinese counterpart of testing firm ChargerLab.
The outlet, according to MacRumors, has previously shared in advance details of the 18W USB-C power adapter that Apple had eventually bundled with the 2018 version of the iPad Pro. That means the latest piece of information from Chongdiantou can be trusted, considering its good track record.
To give credence to its claim, Chongdiantou published an image of the 96W charger that looks a close twin of the 87W charger that comes in the box with the 15-inch MacBook Pro. It makes sense that since the 16-inch MacBook Pro has a larger screen, then it will need a higher capacity charger with presumably faster-charging capability
All these indicators point to the likelihood that Apple intends to release the 96W charger with the 16-inch MacBook Pro if indeed the laptop will see the light of the day later this 2019, BGR said in a related report.
It is not unsurprising that the same 96W charger can be used on other Apple-made devices, a feature that is part of the report from Chongdiantou. Supposedly, the fast charger can be used to charge up other MacBook models and iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. For the latter, though, users will need to get a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter to take advantage of the power brick's fast-charging capability.
Now there are two things to weigh in why a 96W charger will be deployed with the 16-inch MacBook Pro aside from the obvious that it has a bigger screen. First, it is highly possible that the laptop will be given a larger battery, according to Ubergizmo, and it supposed since the display will be the unit's most power-hungry component.
[REPORT] According to information received by Chongdiantou, the upcoming 16-inch MacBook Pro could ship with a 96W USB-C power adapter. The current 15-inch MacBook Pro ships with a 87W USB-C power adapter. pic.twitter.com/6lCuDf0mHW — Apple Hub (@theapplehub) October 4, 2019
However, it needs to be pointed out that a 96W charger will not necessarily deliver power to the 16-inch MacBook Pro at a faster rate. The unit could have a larger battery pack and will require more time to fill up. Likely, in the end, charging time for the 96W charger will be the same as the 87W charger, which Apple provides for the 15-inch MacBook Pro.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is certainly landing in late 2019, per the latest prediction given by Ming-chi Kuo, who added that the unit will boast of a redesign from its older siblings. One revision is the use of the scissor keyboard, which will mark Apple's ditching of the butterfly keyboard that was in use in the older models.
