Manchester United has an edge over other teams in the pursuit of Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund is seeking roughly $144 million for the 20-year-old football player, a hefty amount that most clubs may not be able to afford. Most are feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing financial burdens due to lost revenue tied up to games not being played the past months. There is no telling how long this will last but the Red Devils are playing it safe.

United has slowed down on target, a move most feel is one that will help them save up for a big splash in the summer. And the obvious target is Sancho. The Red Devils are believed to have sufficient cash reserves plus the fact that Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward has reportedly taken out a loan to help. However, Woodward cautioned that they need to try and hold off lavish spending on high-priced players. He did not mention though if he was referring to Sancho.

Hence, waiting for Dortmund to possibly lower its asking price makes sense. However, there is a slight risk to that intent. Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid are also interested in the English football player, meaning they could pull off something. However, they too are facing the financial pinch, seen as the reason why United is confident that they hold good chances of acquiring Sancho even if they wait, the Daily Mail reported.

Also, each club that has expressed interest have varying cases. Real Madrid is interested but maybe prioritizing Kai Havertz of Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool is also having budget issues while Manchester City prefers to fill up other key positions within the team.

Hence, United could be making the right move for Sancho. Unless the financial situation plaguing the football league improves, there is a chance that the Red Devils may pass up on Sancho – at least for this summer. The case could be different next year, meaning United could opt to revisit the possible acquisition of the English winger.

For Dortmund, the club is clueless about what the future holds. They are aware of the interest in Sancho although the player has shown no indication he wants to move to another club. Further, he has two more years left in his current deal with Die Borussen, a reason why the head of licensing player department Sebastian Kiel feels that no transfer will be made at least this coming summer.
